Big Van Vader Vs The Boss – Spring Stampede 17/04/1994

Big Van Vader Vs The Boss – Spring Stampede 17/04/1994

IT’S TIME!

IT’S TIME!

IT’S…

ME WATCHING AND REVIEWING SOME WRESTLING FOR THE WCW POLL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MONTHS TIME~!

Sadly, the Boss isn’t Bruce Springsteen, but Big Boss Man. *sigh* I’d totally pay to see Springsteen get his face caved in by Vader…

Holy motherfucking SHIT at the bump on the rampway before the match even begins!!! Vader and Boss go at it straight away, and Race grabs Boss, allowing Vader to take one hell of a run up for a Splash… only for Boss to move and Vader to legit run Race down; and it looks terrific. Race takes a bump better than 90% of the young guys today.

MOAR Vader running and jumping! This time he has Boss down in the ring, and he takes another run up from the ramp way and dives over the ropes (!!!) for a splash that way! Fucking hell. Boss gets his legs up though, and all that running and jumping were wasted. Hate when that happens…

Boss really takes the fight to Vader, and Vader does that usual amazing job of looking vulnerable despite being 6ft whatever and over 400lbs and an all round bad motherfucker who caves faces in for a living.

After getting a taste of the old “cave in faces” Vader, its Boss’ turn to take one helluva bump. I mean Christ, what the hell is wrong with these guys? They should NOT be doing these kinds of bumps!

Since I haven’t seen any wrestling outside of current WWE for the last month or so at least, starting back with Vader is just… awesome. I almost forgot how great those punches were. Almost. Not quite. It’s still great seeing them again though :).

This baby is just a tremendous back and forth big man match that you HAVE to see for this poll, no question about it. You have to see it even more if you are a Vader fan… and I’m positive everyone on here is :P.

In the end Vader is the one able to take the most punishment and still come back, getting him the win, but not before having to resort to the Moonsault when the Vader Splash from the ropes doesn’t work.

I’m definitely reserving a spot on my list for this bad boy.

Sting Vs Lord Steven Regal – Great American Bash 16/06/1996

Sting Vs Lord Steven Regal – Great American Bash 16/06/1996

This is a grudge match of sorts… or something. Not quite sure what Regal did to Sting, mainly because Dusty is the one trying to explain it :P.

Sting is pissed and goes right after Regal, but those forearms and uppercuts (and maybe a thumb to the eye lol) of Regal are too much for even the Stinger. So much so that Sting’s face paint is almost all gone after the first couple of minutes lol.

Regal keeps in control for the most part with his superior wrestling skills, with Sting getting some hope spots in. Love the part where Sting goes for a sunset flip, and Regal starts punching at thin air to keep himself from falling over or something lol. Doesn’t work :P.

More awesomeness from Regal as he does his Lord Steven Regal pose, and kinda dances at the same time, as he waits for Sting to turn around so he can blast his face off with an awesome looking dropkick. He follows this up by striking Sting’s face a bunch of times while insulting America as the camera is in his face.

A lot of this match is Regal stretching Sting on the mat, but it is about as far from boring as Chavo is close to boring (that makes sense, right? 😛 ) thanks to Regal constantly doing something rather than just applying a hold. I’d honestly say that Regal is better at it in this match than I have EVER seen Arn. Yeah. Man is legit fucking awesome throughout the entire match.

Sting’s “superman” hope spot towards the end is really well done too. Regal has a wrist lock applied, and  knocks Sting down, only for Sting to kip up and take a bunch of forearm shots to the face and not feel them, and then apply some force of his own to Regal via the wrist lock. Then Regal thumbs him in the eye and goes back to work lol.

The Regal Stretch is finally put on Sting, and Sting doesn’t even attempt to get to the ropes. He just sits there in it, not giving up, and Regal actually lets go of the hold as he is in such disbelief that someone can be in the hold and NOT give up or even attempt to get out! A pissed off Regal sends Sting into the corner and stiffs the fuck out of him, until Sting does his superman schtick again, and locks in the Scorpion Death lock for the win.

Man, Regal was beyond epic in this one. Sting took his entire offence as good as anyone I have seen, and it was amazing to see one of the company’s biggest stars get so dominated by essentially a mid card guy. I really liked how they didn’t just let Regal destroy Sting and have Sting do his superman comeback right at the end; they teased it a few times with Regal cheating his way back into control, before Regal dished out everything he had and still couldn’t put away Sting, giving Sting the perfect opportunity to end the match himself.

Really wanna vote for this one, but it might only end up in my bottom 10.

Vader Vs Ricky Steamboat – Saturday Night 16/10/1993

Vader Vs Ricky Steamboat – Saturday Night 16/10/1993

Already seen this match, and reviewed it, but fuck it, it was so awesome I wanna do it again!

This is a Human Cage Match, which is just a Lumberjack match. Why the stupid name? Fuck knows lol. Also, how come these two men didn’t have a PPV match? This is the 3rd title match between the two to take place on TV. Then again, I guess with only a couple of PPV’s in the year, they were just filling the time between them with something awesome, and then saving Cactus/Vader for the PPV.

The match starts much slower than their other matches, with Vader shoving Steamboat around but not causing any damage. One push sends Steamboat out of the ring to the heel side, and things nearly kick off as Steamboat wants to get back in the ring himself but the heels want to throw him back the hard way, causing the babyfaces to come to his aid.

Once back in the ring, Vader decides that playtime is over, and face caving time has begun! My god the shots Vader throws out are just so awesome. It has been said before, by me, Andy, and everyone else on here that watches Vader matches, but the shots in THIS match just seem so much better than usual.

I mentioned in my previous review about the Rocky movie similarities, and I still get that feeling this time around. Steamboat takes those shots in the corner, but keeps getting up and asking for more, and Vader is more than happy to keep them coming. The Dragon takes everything the champ gives him, and keeps coming back. He eventually moves out of the way of a Vader Splash on the outside, and Vader does his signature guardrail bump, and Steamboat finally gets a break!

Having already faced Vader on a couple of occasions, Steamboat knows he needs to throw everything he can at the champ if he even hopes to win. A sort of superplex (looks more like a DDT from the ropes lol), a DDT, a figure four and a huge back suplex are all high impact or highly painful moves, but not even those can keep Big Van Vader down!!! The booking of Vader as a beast and champion in 1993 was beyond epic. From what I have seen of his 1993 so far I’d probably consider him to be one of the better World Champions EVER. He dominated and looked unbeatable, but at the same time he could make you believe that his opponents would have a shot at taking the title from him when they were having a comeback etc.

Speaking of believable, it’s amazing that I can actually believe and accept and whatever other word for it you wanna put, that Steamboat can take Vader’s punches to the head and fire his own shots back, get to his feet and actually back Vader into a corner and out punch the guy! Again I go back to the Rocky similarities, with Rocky being out matched in power against guys like Clubber Lang and Ivan Drago, but managing to take their shots and come back with his own and even get the better of them as time goes on because he has more heart and more stamina too. Steamboat is the Rocky Balboa of wrestling.

The Human Cage stipulation comes into play for the finish which I really like. Vader is sent out of the ring, and everyone runs around to try and get him in, and the faces and heels get into it a little while doing this. Sid however, decides to let everyone else deal with Vader, and while the ref is distracted by all that, Powerbombs Steamboat in the ring, allowing Vader to get the 3 count!

Just an awesome match, and I’m really glad it made it on a DVD too (Rise & Fall of WCW I think? Or the Steamboat set? One of the two lol). Vader’s shots look better here than I’ve ever seen them look. Steamboat takes them like a man, and his selling is nothing short of incredible. Hard to believe that I like this more on a rewatch, because I fucking loved it the first time around lol. There is a spot in my top 10 for this match, no matter what else I watch!

2012 Royal Rumble – My Thoughts & Predictions

rr

“It’s the most wonderful time, of the year”

No, not Christmas. ROYAL RUMBLE, baby! As a wrestling fan, the Royal Rumble is my absolute favourite time of the year. The 30 man over the top rope battle royal provides a ton of fun and entertainment, excitement, suspense, drama, comedy and unpredictability. It’s like what WWE should be all year round, but they’re not, so they ram it all into one match to make up for it lol. We have surprise returns, crazy eliminations, insane entrants (Benoit going in as #1 only to win etc). I just love it. I avoid spoilers as much as possible these days, but for the RR, I avoid EVERYTHING I possibly can. I don’t want to know what number anyone is gonna come out at unless it’s announced on the shows (like Miz being #1 this year). I don’t want to know anyone that’s returning during the rumble match. And above all else, I don’t want to know who is going to win. Not knowing a damn thing makes watching the show live that much more fun. So, with the 2012 RR just days away, here are my thoughts and predictions on the “final” card:

kc

John Cena Vs Kane

Emperor PalpaKane is trying to turn John Cena into a sith. At least, that’s how I’m seeing this feud. Leading up to WM against The Rock, its nice to see Cena involved in a feud like this, but come on, how fucking random is it that Kane showed up one week with his mask back on to try and make Cena evil? Unless The Rock somehow hired Kane to do this, then this is probably the biggest random coincidence. Cena needs to embrace the hate that he’s getting, something The Rock was trying to get him to do, and while this is going on Kane happens to show up to get Cena to embrace the hate. So yeah. Random coincidence for now lol.

Not been a big fan of the build to this either, with the exception of Zack Ryder being brutally assaulted on a regular basis and taken out of action last week :D. Cena has just done some weird constipation faces in an attempt to look angry, and that’s about it. Match itself will be a big brawl with probably a shitty ending.

Winner: John Cena

Daniel Bryan (c) Vs The Big Show Vs Mark Henry – Triple Threat Steel Cage Match – World Heavyweight Championship

Man am I looking forward to this! Big Show and Henry started their feud back in July, and then when Show returned we got some really fun big man matches between the two, including the awesome moment of the ring breaking, something that WWE hasn’t actually overused! During this feud they were building Bryan up and he too had some incredibly fun matches with Henry, which eventually led to him winning the WHC by cashing in his MITB (which he won at the MITB PPV… the same show that essentially started Henry’s epic “Hall of Pain” gimmick and was the major groundwork for the Henry/Show feud… fuck that PPV was awesome!). With the WHC, Bryan as a character has evolved into one of my absolute favourites in wrestling right now, and he’s had some fun matches with Show and some more with Henry as well! So all 3 guys have shown they have chemistry with each other, with Bryan and Henry having 2 really great gimmicks atm and Show, while not doing anything that noteworthy as far as being a character, doing perfectly fine. Its rare that a triple threat happens when I don’t feel like its forced. This match just feels “natural”, like all 3 men really deserve to be in the match. Months of build up to them having a triple threat through singles matches, tag matches, and interference. Its nice to see. And it being in a cage? Perfect. Bryan has been doing everything he can to escape with the title, and this time he can’t escape with the belt unless he manages to climb a 15th steel cage and avoids 2 monsters at the same time. Wow, not only does this legit deserve to be a triple threat, but the stipulation is actually spot on too! Which makes me wonder, just who the fuck is booking this thing on SD?

The match itself has potential to be fun as fuck. Not sure it will be “great” in terms of quality, but I’m actually confident I won’t be disappointed with it. Might end up being the MOTN depending on the time it gets. Could be better than the WWE Title match. Yeah, I said it.

Winner – Daniel Bryan

CM Punk (c) Vs Dolph Ziggler – Special Guest Referee John Laurinaitis – WWE Title

The actual Ziggler/Punk feud hasn’t been very good, and has been very, very overshadowed by the Laurinaitis/Punk feud. Which is a shame because I think Ziggler has been tremendous as of late and really deserved more of a spotlight for this match than he’s been getting. Laurinaitis being the referee could end up hurting the match, or could help it, it really isn’t something I can predict. The whole ” Laurinaitis might get fired on Raw” crap they seemed to just throw into the end of Raw last week also kinda screws up the guest referee stuff because now Big Johnny is less likely to try to screw Punk in fear of getting fired the next night. Way to kill the heat. Speaking of, Punk hit the GTS on Big Johnny on Raw too. More heat killed. Laurinaitis can’t screw Punk or he will likely be fired, and Punk knocked him out. Where the FUCK do they go from here? Ah well. Hopefully now the Rumble match will be more about, you know, the match than the special referee.

Which brings me to the match itself. Ziggler is excellent right now. His mic work has improved a ton, and he’s awesome in the ring. Punk is also great in the ring. They’ve had a couple of really good matches on TV recently. This is the match most likely to steal the show.

Winner – CM Punk

30 Man Royal Rumble Match – Winner receives WWE/WHC match at WrestleMania 28

Announced Competitors:

Jinder Mahal
Sheamus
Santino Marella
Wade Barrett
Mick Foley
The Miz (#1 entrant)
R-Truth
Chris Jericho

As far as I know they haven’t announced anyone else right now, but I could be wrong. WWE.com usually has a list of the people who are going to be in it, but not this year! Which I’m not bothered about because it just adds more unpredictability to the match.

Rumble matches are THE reason I love the RR event as much as I do. Some of my favourite matches are RR matches. 1991, 1992, 1996, 2001, 2002, 2009. All super awesome fun matches imo. And out of the 24 they’ve done so far, I’d only say… 3 of them are actually bad matches. 3 out of 24 (95, 98, 99). Pretty great statistic in wrestling I think lol.

Some great talent has already been announced, and there are a bunch of other talented guys who haven’t officially been announced for it that will no doubt be part of it too. Combine that with some potential surprise entrants and just like every single year, the match has potential to be fun as fuck. And just like every year, I can’t fucking wait!!!

So who is going to win? Some years are predictable as hell, some aren’t. This year isn’t as easy to predict imo. Orton just returned on SD and is very heavily protected by WWE, and with this being in his home town he has a huge chance to win the thing. I hope he doesn’t, but it could happen. Sheamus has been pushed huge since day one, and the last year he’s actually deserved the push he’s got. Wade Barrett probably has less of a chance than Orton and Sheamus, but despite everything that has happened to him booking wise, WWE keep trying to shove him down our throats lol. I’m hoping he and Orton will continue their feud by eliminating each other, that way neither of them can win :D.

But my overall pick to win is:

Winner – Chris Jericho

Jericho has just returned. Huge hype for it, and he’s been smart with his return by doing… nothing. Nothing except for telling us that the world is going to end at the RR. And I believe it will start with him winning the RR. Once that happens Jericho will unleash… himself upon us. And it should be awesome.

WWE Vengeance 2011 Thoughts & Predictions

So it occurs to me that WWE have a PPV on tonight, and since I’ve been lacking in written content for a while (not from a lack of it, just laziness when it comes to formatting it on this blog and posting it lol), I figured I’d post some thoughts and predictions.
Beth Phoenix Vs Eve – Divas Title

Beth and Natalya are on some weird rampage attempt, doing what they can to take out all the “barbie doll” divas. Only problem is they’ve been losing left right and fucking centre for the most part ever since the beginning of their “push”. Hell, it took them what, 2 months to finally take the belt from Kelly Kelly? And Eve beat Natalya a couple of weeks ago to gain a title shot against Beth. Not sure if we are supposed to see these two as a threat to the “barbie dolls” or not lol.

Anyway… I don’t give a shit about the match or who wins. I haven’t cared about the divas division since Trish, Lita and Mickie all left the company.

Prediction: Beth retains

Air Boom Vs Zig Zag Paddy Swagg – Tag Team Titles

Air Boom is a shit name, and a shit tag team too. Bourne is a talented wrestler, but Kofi is a jumping, botching, all around annoying wrestler that he brings down Bourne making the team in general a pile of shit. Ziggler and Swagger on the other hand, are both great and COULD be a really good tag team… if WWE gave a shit about tag teams. It seems that any time either Swagger or Ziggler gain momentum, they (the powers that be) take it away from them. Hell, both are former World Champions and it was quite possibly the worst time in their careers when they were champs. Swagger won it out of nowhere and did nothing with it, being booked like shit the entire time… and Dolph had it for about 15 minutes, serving no other purpose than to give Edge another pointless title reign that he didn’t need nor deserve.

Anywho… the match COULD be good. If, and only if, they make Bourne the FIP (and given some of the brutal attacks he’s had in recent weeks at the hands of Zig Zag Paddy Swagg, there is a good chance he will be) and work a nice old fashioned Southern Tag Formula match, then it has some potential. But this is WWE, and for some reason anything with potential gets fucked up the arse. So Either Kofi will play the FIP and do a shit job at it like he always does, or Kofi and Bourne will dominate the majority of the match letting the heels get as little in as possible.

Prediction – Zig Zag Paddy Swagg win the titles

Sheamus Vs Christian

They had a really fun match at… whatever the last PPV was (so many in such a short time I forget these things), but it was missing a little something. Mainly a control segment lol. With Sheamus being so big and powerful and being booked so strongly, its hard for someone “small” like Christian to really gain the upperhand in a match like this, even using heel tactics. It CAN be done, no doubt about it, but WWE are so fucking protective when it comes to certain guys that I’m doubting it will. I hope I’m wrong though, because a decent length match between these two could be really fucking boss.

Prediction – Sheamus

Randy Orton Vs Cody Rhodes

Guessing the IC title isn’t on the line, right? Kinda sucks, since a feud with a big main eventer like Orton would do wonders for the credibility of the IC title. Ah well. Feud has been pretty good, just a shame the start of it wasn’t fucking shown in full on TV except like, Australia or something stupid like that, so starting a feud based on something we didn’t get to see in full (fucking no blood policy…) is kinda retarded, but they’ve managed to get around it the best they can.

Not sure how good the match will be, since Orton these days only really works well with a select few guys, and Rhodes may or may not be one of them.

Prediction – Cody Rhodes, by DQ

Dolph Ziggler Vs Zack Ryder – United States Title

Poor Dolph has to work twice in one night… which is actually good for us fans because he’s a tremendous worker. Shame his opponent here is Zack Ryder. Shouldn’t he be defending his made up title on the internet instead?

Match might be ok, but I don’t put much stock in Zack’s in ring ability so it’ll probably only be good if Ziggler carries his arse.

Prediction – Dolph Ziggler (If Ryder wins the US Belt I’ll fucking scream)

Triple H & CM Punk Vs The Miz & R-Truth

Remember when Punk was the hottest thing in the company, working with Cena in the main event for the title and actually winning. Twice. Those were awesome times. SO WHY THE FUCK IS HE WORKING AGAINST MIZ AND TRUTH?

Punk will do what he can to make this match good, but fuck, I don’t don’t care. HHH is average at best, and Miz & Truth both suck. Truth especially. I’m expecting this feud to continue onto Survivor Series in which it’ll end in a traditional SS match. Then hopefully after that Punk can go back to working with main event talent again.

Prediction – Miz & Truth, probably through either shenanigans or miscommunication from HHH and Punk. Not clean, anyway.

Mark Henry Vs The Big Sh0w – World Heavyweight Championship

Henry has been on a role ever since his feud with Big Show leading into SummerSlam, and I don’t expect it to stop just yet. Keep this one short and it should end up sweet. Let them go full force for 10 minutes max with some crazy show of strength finish from Henry and all will be good.

Only problem I really have with this match is that The Undertaker is heavily rumoured to return at this PPV.. and for some reason Undertaker + Return = Henry way too fucking often, so I really fucking hope if Undertaker does indeed come back tonight he stays the fuck away from Henry. Main reason being is that they tend to have shitty matches, regardless of how great Undertaker is and even how good Henry is right now. Plus Henry isn’t the safest worker around and ‘Taker needs to be healthy for WM. And Henry probably wouldn’t win the feud either, which would suck because Undertaker doesn’t need the belt and Henry’s push doesn’t need to end just yet.

Prediction – Mark Henry

Alberto Del Rio Vs John Cena – Last Man Standing WWE Title

If any match NEEDS a Last Man Standing stip… its not this one. Seriously, where the fuck did it come from? Doesn’t help that they had like, 2 weeks to build to the match itself, but they announced the stipulation on the last Raw before the fucking PPV. How is ANYONE supposed to get excited for this?

Shit, mostly non existant feud between two wrestles that I really couldn’t care less for right now. Needless to say I don’t care about this match.

Prediction – Cena, because he needs another title reign dammit! (and yes, that was sarcasm…)
